The Elko branch of FISH began in October of 1987 when the Elko County Commissioners announced that all assistance to indigents would be terminated, with the exception of medical assistance. This meant that impoverished persons in need of assistance within Elko County would have to rely upon private charity.
The funding for FISH consists of contributions from our local Churches and the City of Elko as well as individual contributions. FISH also receives significant funding each year from the United Way.
The mining industry has also been very generous with FISH over the years, particularly the Newmont Mining Company and its Legacy Fund, and Barrick Goldstrike.
Elko FISH is a partner agency of Newmont and receives funding from their Legacy Fund on an annual basis. We want to give a really big Thank You to the Newmont employees who make this possible!
